EMPIRE —
While mother nature had plans for rain Saturday, the Empire Fire Department forged on and held their fundraiser at the Empire Public School grounds, not letting it get in their way.
Empire Assistant Fire Chief Steve Earnhart was organizing the car show, which had 39 entries show up to line the parking lot in front of the school.
The lot was full of older and newer vehicles with modified trucks and tricked-out Volkswagen Beetles parked side by side with classic muscle cars.
“We had the registration set for 8 to 10 (a.m.) but we extended the time to 11 (a.m.) because of the rain,” Earnhart said. “We wanted everyone else to come in and enter.”
The rainfall did put a damper on the inflatables installed in the “Kid Zone” and complicated efforts by the Marlow Gunfighters to put on a second show for the crowd but efforts were made Friday night to relocate the meal inside to the Empire cafeteria.
Steve Bomb of the Gunfighters strolled the car shot lot, standing out in the rain while looking at some of the vehicles brought by the community and two car clubs, including Vertically Challenged, a club from Lawton.
“We like doing events like this because they are just a lot of fun and for a good cause,” Bomb said.
While people munched on barbecue in the cafeteria, the Toby Wayne Band played some cover songs and original material for the crowd from the cafeteria stage.
Attendees were also able to participate in a shotgun and pistol raffle, with the funds from the events being raised to help install a tank on a truck given to the firefighters from the Department of Defense four months ago.
“The show still goes on, we got food to sale and cars for people to look at,” Earnhart said.
Webmaster for the Vertically Challenged car club, Ralph Pugh was out with his modified truck, spending time to setup an umbrella so the car show attendees would have a chance to see the detail on the interior work on his ride.
“We like to support the area and local services and have fun at the same time,” Pugh Said. “We tend to roll to what's the best events to support people.”
Vertically Challenged brought 12 vehicles of all models and types to try and vie for the award being presented for the car show.
With his 1961 Chevy Corvette, Bill Hutsell won the Best of Show award.

Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues
The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?
Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
