Humane Society to host ‘Spay-ghetti’ fundraiser

DUNCAN — While most residents know about the Stephens County Humane Society and their shelter, there are those who don’t know an important advocacy the Society has.

With their new event, the Spay-ghetti lunch and dinner, they hope the play on words will draw attention to the spay and neuter program.

It will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.  on Sept. 28 at the First Christian Church gathering hall.

With unwanted pets being dropped off all the time, it’s essential to keep the population under control.

“All animals that leave the shelter are either spayed or neutered,” said Kelly Nelson, SCHS board president. “If they’re too young when they leave, the new owners are given certificates to be able to get them spayed or neutered.”

While the name draws attention to that specific program, the funds from the Spay-ghetti event will go toward the shelter as a whole and everything it needs to keep the animals safe and healthy.

There are no raffles or auctions going on at the event, only good food.

Tickets are $10 per adult and $5 for children.

That ticket will get patrons a plate of spaghetti, salad, bread and a homemade dessert. The desserts are donated from several members of the community and the main dish is to be mouth watering.

“Lonny Caines with the First Presbyterian Church is making the sauce, which he is famous for,” Nelson said.

Nelson said they started out with 600 tickets and now have only about 70. Today is the last day to purchase tickets and there won’t be any sold at the door.

To ensure getting a ticket, you can purchase them at the Duncan Chamber of Commerce or call them at 580-255-3655 or call Nelson at 580-606-3361.

While there is a carry-out option available, Nelson and the Society invite the public to sit a while with them and enjoy the meal in a special atmosphere. The gathering hall will be decked out “Lady and the Tramp” decor, such as checked tablecloths and candles similar to those seen in the film. Additionally, the family-friendly classic will be playing during meal times.

“We’re just always looking for new ideas,” said Nelson. “We hope people will come and have a good time with their family.”
