Main Street gearing up for annual car show

DUNCAN — Tammy Johnson is counting the days until the Main Street Car and Motorcycle Show. For people keeping count, there’s 25 days remaining.

There’s also plenty of new things added to this year’s event, which is growing in popularity now that it is in its fifth year.

Johnson, Main Street Duncan director, said this year’s show has attracted people from around the country, including Hobbs, N.M.. The show is set for April 19 and 20 on Main Street.

“This year, all of our sponsorships were sold out in three weeks,” Johnson said. “We didn’t have to work as hard to find sponsorships. It seems like people are more willing to sponsor you when you get past the first five years.”

Last year’s show had 170 entries, but Johnson expects there to be more this year.

Johnson said this year’s show will feature things people have grown to expect, but will also include some new aspects to keep the show growing.

One of the additions to this year’s show is a new category — Off-Road 4x4 vehicles. Unlike other vehicles entered into the car show, the vehicles aren’t expected to be in mint condition.

“They’re coming from all over Oklahoma,” Johnson said. “It’s really exciting.”

There will also be a children’s cart show, where children can enter their bikes, trikes, wagons, Power Wheels and 4-wheelers. Johnson said the children will get their chance to compete just like the adults. The youngsters will show how mint they can make their vehicles, she said.

The children will need to take chairs so they can sit with their vehicles. The children’s portion of the show will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20. Like the adult competition, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive trophies, although all children will receive participation ribbons and goodie bags.

“It’s teaching kids structure and responsibility of their vehicles,” Johnson said.

On April 19, the crowds and participants can expect the burnout at 6:30 p.m. at Freedom Biker Church, and the car cruise from 6 to 10 p.m. But there’s an addition this year.

Johnson said there will be tailgate parties going on with a chance for the best tailgate partiers to win a stainless-steel grill. The Tailgate Patrol will choose the winner based on party theme, food quality and the atmosphere of the party.

There is no cost to enter the tailgate party, which is set for 6 to 10 p.m.

Although there’s plenty for everyone to look at and do throughout the event, Johnson said the Texas Motor Speedway will have two vehicles on display. These vehicles include a Camry and a bathtub racer.

Registration for the car show begins at 11 a.m. at 10th and Main. All participants will receive goodie bags and a meal ticket from the AMBUCS food booth. The meal ticket is sponsored by the Duncan Convention and Visitors Bureau.
