DUNCAN —
Stephens County Republican Headquarters held a Grand Opening Saturday in preparation for the upcoming November elections.
Every election cycle, the GOP rents a space for about three months and that location gives the candidates a place to run their campaign out of. It also gives the public a place to go to learn more about the candidates and issues surrounding the elections.
“Volunteers are here to answer questions and it’s an opportunity to get campaign material,” said Fair. “We offer an educated opinion of how to vote, a recommendation.”
For the next three months, the headquarters will be located at 2210 N. U.S. Highway 81 and open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. GOP representatives and volunteers made visitors welcome to their first day open with free donuts, hot dogs and numerous campaign materials.
“We originally planned to have free car washes but it doesn’t look like the weather is going to cooperate, so we’ll do those another Saturday,” said Steve Fair, Stephens County GOP chairman. “I hope to see folks come in today and grab some campaign material. I expect to see a couple hundred people come through.”
Among the materials are not just those for the Mitt Romney side of the presidential race but several local candidates running on the Republican ticket. Those include Sheriff Wayne McKinney, Corey Brooks, Lonny Estes, Don Barrington and Scott Biggs.
Not only do visitors and information seekers have the option of picking up bumper stickers, yard signs and other materials, but each one receives a copy of The County Patriot.
This printed edition holds much information for the Republican party, including all the state questions and information for the judge retention ballot.
Several of the volunteers were on site during the opening and while the older workers helped in the campaign area, younger volunteers were available to help serve food and set up.
“We usually volunteer when (the GOP) have a big event,” said Charis Sutterfield of herself and siblings Lydia, Joel, Daniel, Hope and Talitha. “We plan to get more involved as we get older and become more politically active.”
In the first few minutes of opening, Fair surmised that about 15 to 20 residents had already visited the headquarters. Some had been waiting anxiously for the doors to be opened for several weeks now.
“I kept driving by and finally saw the sign that said they were opening today and I had to be here,” said Janet Rosine. “I wanted to learn more and show my support.”

Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues
The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?
Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
