From reading programs to special projects, the Friends of the Duncan Public Library got to see exactly where their funds go during a presentation at the Friends annual meeting Tuesday night.
One of the biggest projects DPL undertook during 2012 was installing a Nanawall system in the children’s section of the library. This wall allows children’s programs to remain inside the library without disturbing the rest of the building.
“You helped make a long-held dream come true,” said Jan Cole, DPL director. “It’s been so nice and it is practically sound proof.”
It also allows for another meeting space, Cole said, which was demonstrated by the Friends meeting behind the wall for their annual meeting. Cole presented a Powerpoint to show photos of various activities the library hosted that the Friends helped pay for.
Some of these were programs for children, teens and adults, reading programs, Young Adult Writer’ Group, arts and craft activities for children and youth, book clubs and Local Author Day.
“We couldn’t do it without you and if we tried, it wouldn’t be this great without your support,” Cole said. “We have a staff that would do anything to provide these programs and it’s nice to have the resources to tell them to go ahead.”
The Friends funds are provided mostly through donations, membership dues, the library coffee bar and an annual book sale. Currently, the group has about 150 members and are always looking for more. Board members for the Friends are on a yearly rotating basis and the officers for 2013 are Jim Cupples, president; Ed Stahl, vice president; Donna Cope, treasurer; and Kate McKinney, secretary.
“If you want in on that rotation, there are no special requirements,” said Cupples. “All you need is a willingness to serve and an interest in the library.”
