MARLOW — Despite firefighter’s efforts, a home on Rose Road in Marlow, is now ash and rubble.
The Marlow Fire Department responded to the blaze around 8:55 p.m., just east of U.S. Highway 81 on Rose Road. The Marlow firefighters didn’t leave the scene until about 3:30 a.m. Monday, and returned around 5 a.m. Monday to focus on hot spots.
“By the time we got the call and got over there, it was through the roof and nearly completely involved,” Marlow Fire Chief Ryan Hall said.
One Marlow resident received minor burns to his hands because of the fire, Hall said. An ambulance was at the scene Sunday to pick up the man.
The Stephens County Sheriff’s Department contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Hall said the Sheriff’s Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be taking lead on the fire investigation.
Hall said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but the investigation should help with the determination.
“I know they were doing some work in there,” Hall said about the homeowners.
The house was undergoing a remodel. A porch had just been completed to the house, although nothing remained of the work completed.
The Marlow Fire Department had 15 firefighters respond to the blaze. Duncan and Rush Springs were called for mutual aid. Duncan brought one brush truck, while Rush Springs brought a tanker and two grass units.
Hall said the fire did spread beyond the property the house was on.
“It jumped the road,” Hall said. “We had a spot fire jump 200 yards and started another grass fire.”
This fire is the second fire in less than a month to result in a total loss of a structure, and the third significant fire in the Duncan and Marlow areas, since the beginning of February.
The first fire was Feb. 18 and resulted in the loss of the Foursquare Gospel Church building at Fifth and Pine in Duncan. The second fire was minutes before midnight Friday night at 209 E. Spruce. Although that structure didn’t burn to the ground, its homeowner died.
Hall said the Rose Road fire was still smoldering, but he didn’t expect it to last much longer. The firefighters were expected to keep tabs on the fire scene throughout the day Monday.
