Candidates take stage in Velma

VELMA — About 75 people showed up in Velma Tuesday night to listen to candidates make their pitch for officers covering all or part of Stephens County.

“Our goal was to get candidates in front of the public,” Chris Deal, President/CEO of the Duncan Area Chamber of Commerce, said. “We wanted them to engage them with the public.”

Several candidates brought campaign literature as well as yard signs to the Velma-Alma High School Auditorium.

Some supporters wore campaign t-shirts and baseball caps as an extra show of support, heading into the Nov. 6 elections.

The Duncan Area Chamber of Commerce played host to the forum, with Deal moderating.

He said the forums would give the public a chance to hear the candidates in person and perhaps get a better feel for who they might support in the Nov. 6 election.

He said more people might vote if they can hear from and identify with the voters.

Those taking part Tuesday night’s forum included:

- Democrat Stewart Meyer of Chickasha in House District 51, which includes part of Stephens County. State Rep. Corey Holland, R-Marlow, is not seeking re-election.

- Democrat Mike Fullerton and Republican Corey Brooks in a newly drawn state Senate District 43, which includes much of Stephens County.

- Democrat Todd Churchman, who is seeking re-election for District 2 county commissioner, and Republican Lonnie Estes.

- Republican Sheriff Wayne McKinney and his challenger, Democrat Jimmy Williams, who is now police chief in Marlow.

- Democrat Donna Bebo and independent RJ Harris, who are running against Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Cole in the state’s 4th congressional district.

  • A special day for memories

Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
