DUNCAN —
Despite having a smaller showing than the past few years, the 34th annual Stephens County OHCE Quilt Show this weekend was deemed a success by its organizers.
Usually, there are between 80-90 quilts entered and the front rooms to the Stephens County Historical Museum are filled to capacity with them.
This year, there were an estimated 60-65 quilts, which still covered the walls and some standing showcases.
“It’s gone smoothly,” said Zelpha Taylor, quilt show co-chair. “We don’t have as many as we did last year but there is some wonderful hand work to see.”
Judging occurred before the show opened up Friday afternoon and everyone who entered a “Colors of Fall” quilt received a critique sheet for their work.
Several won awards for their efforts.
“Fall is probably one of the prettiest season in Oklahoma and these show that,” said Taylor.
One of the quilts who won a ribbon was the work of Dixie Anderson, a masterpiece titled “Sterling Tiger.”
More than 7,300 one-inch squares made from 24 different fabrics were stacked together and carefully embroidered over to hold them apart.
The result is a the image of a large tiger head.
“Most of (the quilters) will take their quilts home and they don’t sell them,” Taylor. “Most people won’t pay what they’re worth because a lot of time and money goes into making each one.”
Several people came out to view the various quilts, including some who were only visiting the area.
Judy Mooney traveled from Borger, Texas with her husband for his Duncan High School class reunion and read about the event in the Banner.
“My husband wanted to go to the casino and this is much more up my alley, so I came here instead,” said Mooney. “I quilt also and am always looking for quilting ideas.”
Another aspect to the quilt show is their annual quilt raffle.
The quilt was a full sized “Colors of Fall” quilt made by June McGuire.
All funds from the raffle went to the museum.
“Betty (Rupe) has done a great job with the raffle,” said Taylor. “I’m not sure how much she has collected but it’s done well.”
