Area schools see increase in enrollment

DUNCAN — Several Stephens County school districts have seen an increase in enrollment after a decline in the previous school year.

On Oct. 1, school districts throughout Oklahoma submitted their enrollment numbers to the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

On a local level, Duncan, Comanche and Central High noted enrollment increases. Bray-Doyle and Marlow school districts marked enrollment decreases. Velma-Alma and Empire didn’t have numbers available Friday.

Enrollment numbers determine how much state aid a school district will get from the State Department of Education. The higher the enrollment, the more money the school district will get. This is why there is a push for an increase in enrollment.

Duncan’s enrollment was up 80 students from the 2011-12 school year. The school district went from 3,867 in 3011, to 3,947 as of Oct. 1.

While Duncan’s increasing enrollment was a positive thing for the district, the 2011-12 enrollment was down from the 2010-11 school year.

During that year, enrollment dropped 66 students. The enrollment dip followed two years of growth.

Several school district are joining Duncan in increased enrollment numbers.

Comanche has the second largest growth, going from 1,077 in 2011, to 1,101 on Oct. 1. This is a gain of 24 students.

Last year’s enrollment was a decline from the year before, when the school’s enrollment was at 1,125 students. Superintendent Terry Davidson said the enrollment growth this year is a positive thing for the school and the community.

“We’re up a little bit,” Davidson said. “We’ve had some fluctuation.”

He said the number hasn’t stayed steady since the beginning of the school year, but it’s been similar from day to day.

“It’s been about that level since school started,” Davidson said. “I hope that holds.”

Another school that registered an increase in enrollment was Central High.

As of Oct. 1, Central High had an enrollment of 434 students. This is an increase of 18 students from the 416 students in 2011.

Although Central High didn’t have a decline in enrollment for last school year, the enrollment was the same as the year before.

Despite the gain of enrollment in several school districts, Marlow and Bray-Doyle school districts noted a lower enrollment Oct. 1 than Oct. 1, 2011.

Marlow submitted an enrollment of 1,383 students for the 2012-13 school district. This was a decline of 26 students from the 1,409 in 2011.

Even though Marlow did have a lower enrollment this year, the school district still maintained a higher enrollment when compared to the 2010-11 school year, when the district had 1,351 students enrolled.

Bray-Doyle’s enrollment dropped 11 students from the 2011-12 school year to the 2012-13 school year. As of Oct. 1, Bray-Doyle’s enrollment was 349 students. In 2011, enrollment was 360 students.

Numbers from the 2010-11 school year were unavailable.
