DUNCAN —
An unknown driver led four Duncan police officers on a wild chase throughout Duncan and other areas of the county early Wednesday morning. Due to safety risks, the chase was terminated but officers will continue to search for the driver.
Patrol Captain Brian Attaway said the vehicle, a Black GMC Canyon, was originally pulled over for a routine traffic stop. The stop, attempted about 1:08 a.m. Wednesday, was on U.S. Highway 81 going northbound from Pine Avenue, but the driver failed to yield.
The driver instead led officers to Camelback Road, where he sped west for miles until going north on Nine Mile Road. Although assistance was requested throughout the search from other agencies, including Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office, Attaway said everybody was too far away to help.
The search was terminated when officers reached OK Hwy 17 because of the safety risks. The high speeds and the dark increased the difficulty of being able to perform maneuvers on the country roads, which made in unsafe to pursue him for only a traffic violation.
“The danger outweighed the violation they had on him,” Attaway said.
Though the chase was terminated, Attaway said this does not mean police will end their search for the driver. Because they never made contact with the suspect, he said they are not sure who the driver was. However, he said there were leads from the chase that will help them identify the driver.
“I am pretty confident that we will end up catching him.”
Duncan police officers Ryan Atkinson, Ron Corcorran, Nathan Carrio and Jason Downs were all involved in the incident. The officers returned to the city limits shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday.
