To celebrate National Library Week in April, the Duncan Public Library will overlook a few late returned books.
During Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Duncan Public Library Board approved an amnesty week for April 14 though 20 to coincide with the National Library Week. Library Director Jan Cole said library patrons have been asking for an amnesty period.
“We would like to do something special for National Library Week,” Cole said. “We didn’t do an amnesty week in February, and we had people asking about it.”
For amnesty week, people who return late items will have their late fees waved. People with existing late fees will still have to pay them, but Cole said most of these are $2 to $3.
Cole said National Library Week usually slips up on the DPL employees. But this year, planning started about a month ago.
This planning wasn’t just kept to the idea of an amnesty week. Cole said there are plans to have some children’s programming during the week, too.
In other action:
- The board approved changes to the library policy book. Among the changes was allowing for people outside Stephens County to get library cards for a fee of $25. People in Stephens County can continue to get their library cards for free. Another change made was to the use of the copiers. People wanting to make 25 or more copies are supposed to use the upstairs copier because it receives less use than the downstairs copier, which also receives the library’s faxes. The policy book was re-written and re-structured by board member Bill Loughridge.
- The board discussed the Friends of the Duncan Public Library organization being nominated as the best Friends group in Oklahoma through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
- The library is also looking to contract with the PowerShop to have its clients work on flower beds at the library. Cole said the library has a small budget when it comes to landscaping.
“It’s the only city building you see when you’re driving down (U.S.) Highway 81,” Cole said.
