Each year, groups of women from all around the world take time to join in prayer for their sisters across the globe during the World Day of Prayer.
Christian Women United of Duncan has partaken in this event since their formation in 1941. Each church who has joined CWU, take turns hosting the gathering and this year it will begin at 9:30 a.m. March 1 at the First Christian Church Gathering Hall.
This year’s theme is “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” The program this year was done by the women of France, as each year a different country puts it together. CWU Duncan keep this particular theme as part of their group all throughout the year and invite all women of the community to join their events, no matter their denomination.
“All women are appreciated,” said Dottie Wiley, a member and officer for CWU. “We all make a contribution to society.”
Women from more than 170 countries and regions of the world participate in World Day of Prayer, where their main focus is women and children. President Ann Loftin said a candle will be lighted as part of the event to symbolize Christ’s light.
“There are women and children who don’t get to live like we do, who don’t have the freedom that we do,” said Wiley.
Even within Duncan, there are those who are underprivileged and CWU sees that and do what they can to help. The ladies of CWU took Toy Shop under their wing in October 1966. Toy Shop today provides approximately 1,300 children with Christmas gifts each year when they otherwise would go without.
This project is prayed over during the local World Day of Prayer event as well as other projects CWU is involved in.
