Once again, Christian Women’s Fellowship of First Christian Church’s Bean-O-Rama sold all 700 tickets available to the fundraiser.
Not long after the doors to FCC’s Fellowship Hall opened for the lunch hours, patrons began filling the seats quickly. Their plates filled with a bowl of their choice of butter, pinto or navy beans and plain or jalapeño cornbread, as well as coleslaw and desserts.
“We’re so glad the weather is good and we have a real nice variety of desserts that were made by the members,” said Ann Loftin, CWF member. “It was Liz Collins’ first time hosting and I think she’s done a wonderful job.”
Collins was responsible for making sure the kitchen ran smoothly and everything was prepared properly. Both her mother and grandmother are cooks, so Collins said she was just following suite.
“It’s always a lot of fun, I’ve done it all my life,” she said. “I spent about a total of 32 hours getting this event ready.”
Most people chose pinto beans, therefore, six cookers were prepared of that type, while there were only four of each for both butter and navy beans. Arnold Nelson, pastor for FCC, had nothing but praise for the meal saying the beans were “scrumptious.” Additionally, Nelson contributed to the desserts with his mince meat pie.
Others also had high opinions of the food and some were partaking in the event for the first time. The bean dinner has been going on for three years now and for seven years before that CWF hosted a stew dinner.
“It was just delicious and beans is one of my favorite meals to have,” said Lou Ann Williams, who heard about the dinner at her church and in the paper. “I’ve never been before and this is the best fudge cake I’ve ever eaten.”
All proceeds from ticket sales go to the local and national missions that CWF support including the Disciples Mission Fund, Gabriel’s House, Toy Shop and various church projects.
