DUNCAN —
Prompted by a petition from hundreds of Velma area residents, members of the Velma Town Council and Mayor Shawn Enloe unanimously approved renaming a road in honor of the late Braylee Rae Henry.
During the council meeting, School Road, which runs north on the west side of the Velma-Alma school grounds, was approved to be renamed Braylee’s Way, in honor of the teenager and V-A student who was killed on June 7.
Enloe said the council was approached with a petition with nearly 600 signatures to have the road name changed following her death.
“With all that has happened, it’s something folks wanted,” Enloe said. “Someone out there got a petition with almost 600 names on it.”
A concern voiced by Enloe was for the residents of School Road, who will need to make address changes as a result of the proposed name change.
“(The name change proposal) was nothing the council was against, but our main concern was for the people who lived on that road and what they would have to go through,” Enloe said.
A separate petition was filed by the residents of School Road and Enloe said everyone on the road signed in favor of the name change.
“We wanted to make sure everyone was on board, given the paperwork involved,” Enloe said.
The next step will be working with authorities such as the Stephens County Commissioners, who will need to update E911 mapping to make sure emergency services and law enforcement will be dispatched to the correct address.
“We have to go through the particulars to get it changed,” Enloe said. “Obviously, just putting up a sign won’t do it.”
