OSU Alumni group formed for Stephens County

DUNCAN — Although it was created almost by accident, the Stephens County area now has an Oklahoma State University Alumni Association chapter, which met for the first time Thursday night.

President for the Stephens County chapter Laura Goldring called the OSU alumni office to ask if there was a chapter here, was told no and immediately was asked if she’d like to start one. There are more than 1,100 OSU alumni in Stephens County and only 160 are members of the alumni association.

“I was excited and if that is what it takes to get a chapter here, I’m happy to do it,” said Goldring. “There are a lot of people in Stephens County with ties to OSU.”

There were about 22 residents who RSVP’d for the event, which Goldring said she thought was good for the first event but hopes it grows in the future. Gatherings for the chapter are not only for OSU grads but also friends of the university and any of the general public who want to get involved.

“It’s a good way to network, recruit and do community service because that is a way of life for people from OSU,” Goldring said at the event. “Tonight we’re getting input on how everyone wants it to be run and it needs to reflect both OSU and Stephens County.”

Two OSU alumni association representatives were at this meeting. Chapter Relations director Pamela Davis and representative Haley Brorson will keep in contact with Goldring to help with any gatherings or plans.

“We’re attending tonight to help it get going,” said Davis. “We’ll continue to work directly with Laura to help them coordinate.”

Meetings of the chapter will take place at 6 p.m. every third Thursday of the month except December. However, there is a planned watch party for the OSU men’s basketball game against Kansas Feb. 2 at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club.
