Board approves SCSO grant request

DUNCAN — The Stephen’s County Sheriff’s Office will be applying for a grant through the Bureau of Justice Assistance after a decision made by the Board of Stephens County Commissioners in their regular meeting on Monday.

The department is asking for $9,795 to supplement the county’s cost to install computers into the department’s vehicles.

Undersheriff John Smith said the computers would serve many purposes for the department, including saving on fuel consumption. Officers will be able to do much of their own investigation in their vehicles rather than going through the communication center to check the status of a driver’s license, for example.

Smith said the Duncan Police Department is already supplied with this equipment. If the sheriff’s department is also equipped, it will aid communication between the SCSO and the DPD. Because of the cost of the equipment, the amount offered by the grant will not be enough to cover the entire cost of the computers.

“We are looking at having to supplement $35,000 to $40,000 to have the system in the command post and every vehicle,” Smith said.

If the grant is received, all equipment will have to be purchased by June 30.

The board also agreed approve a cooperative agreement between Norma Jo Farmer Trust and Board of County Commissioners to clean up a blind corner at the intersection of McKinley Road and Caddo Road.

In other business, the board approved: a cooperative agreement between the City of Duncan and the Board of County Commissioners to replace bridge 1055;

 land and right-of-way acquisition services agreement between Pinnacle Consulting Management Group and Stephens County for the bridge of Little Beaver Creek project; and

 Circuit Engineering District auction policies for disposing of surplus equipment.

As the board’s next regularly scheduled  meeting would fall on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, the next meeting has now been set for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22.
