ADA —
Three children were among four Loco residents injured late Friday night, when they were involved in a two-vehicle collision on the Chickasaw Turnpike near Ada.
At approximately 10:18 p.m., Rachel L. Mullins of Loco was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on the Chickasaw Turnpike, while Roger W. Cellars of Holdenville was driving eastbound on the turnpike.
Cellars, who was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup, attempted to pass in a no passing zone and collided with the Mullins’ vehicle, which contained three passengers.
As a result of collision, Jacob L. Baird, age 7, of Loco was pinned inside Mullins’ vehicle for approximately 30 minutes, before being freed by Ada Fire & Rescue personnel using a Hurst tool.
The youngster was taken by Valley View EMS to Valley View Hospital in Ada, where he was treated and released.
Mullins, 29, was also transported to Valley View Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Scotty Baird, age 4, was also taken to Valley View Hospital, where he was treated and released, as was 2-year-old Gabriella Baird.
Cellars, 37, was uninjured in the collision, following which he was ticketed for improper overtaking in a marked zone.
However, Loretta L. Rolen, a passenger in Cellars’ truck, sustained head, arm and leg injuries.
The 31-year-old Booneville, Ark. woman was taken by air-evac to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, where she remained Saturday in stable condition.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper James McKee’s report said both vehicles were equipped with seatbelts that were in use and than airbags had deployed in both vehicles.
In addition to McKee, from the Pontotoc County Detachment, assistance came from OHP Trooper Justin Pope and Trooper Eddie Fish of the Pontotoc County Detachment, along with Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Ada Fire Department, Roff Police Department and the Lighthorse Police Department.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
