DUNCAN —
Duncan Little Theatre is joining forces with the Simmons Center to bring a haunted house to life.
The haunted house will be Oct. 27 at the Simmons Center.
Prior to helping the Simmons Center, DLT volunteers were looking for a venue of their own, but couldn’t locate one in time for the Halloween season.
Tana Ashford, DLT member, said the non-profit organization will still make proceeds from the haunted house.
The group will operate three rooms of the haunted house.
One thing that will benefit from the haunted house is it will help cover the mileage needed to get the DLT state winning performance piece, “Dixie Swim Club,” to the regional competition in Louisiana.
The group is already selling miles in hopes to get it’s cast and crew to its first regional competition.
“We will have a gypsy fortune teller,” Ashford said. “All the proceeds from that will go toward ‘Dixie Swim Club.’”
She said it’s been years since DLT has done a haunted house.
But the group welcomes the added exposure and the additional funds.
“We need people,” Ashford said about the haunted house. “We need people to help Duncan Little Theatre.”
Although this year’s haunted house may not be what the organization has originally intended, DLT members are still looking for a venue for next year.
Ashford said the hope is to locate a place outside city limits that can transformed into a horrifying masterpiece.
One reason the theater group joined the Simmons Center project is someone from the Simmons Center reached out to the group, Ashford said.
In addition to the haunted house, the group also plans to haunt this year’s Boo Review earlier in the day on Main Street.
And the DLT Costume Shoppe will open once again to allow people to rent costumes for parties and Halloween.
The times set for rentals include 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25 and 26.
Costumes can be returned between 9 a.m. and noon Nov. 3.
Ashford said appointments can be made throughout the year to rent costumes for various occasions.
Aside from the Halloween spirit, DLT members also plan to give the organization more exposure throughout the holidays. Ashford said there are plans to go Christmas caroling during Main Street’s Holiday Stroll and to participate in the Main Street Christmas Parade.
For now, the next step for DLT is its upcoming auditions for “I’m Getting Murdered in the Morning,” which is an interactive dinner theater. Auditions will be Oct. 7 and 8 at the DLT Building on Main Street.

Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues
The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?
Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
