Vacant house fire appears to be arson

DUNCAN —

A structure fire at 308 W. Willow about 5:15 p.m. caused about $10,000 in damage to the structure but caused no physical harm.

“It was a vacant structure,” Duncan Deputy Fire Chief Dayton Burnside said. “It did not have any utilities turned on. No one lived there.”
The property has been marked off with yellow caution tapes while investigation by Duncan Police Department Fire Marshall Bill Fitzhugh continues to investigate.
“It appears the fire was intentionally set,” Burnside said.
“We know that it was not electrical because there was no power to the house,” Fitzhugh said. “There was no gas in the house either. It looks like it was a box with paper in it that was lit.”
Burnside said it was a dilapidated structure where the roof had already partially fallen in but the fire, which started in the interior of the structure, did cause more damage.
“It burned through the rest of the house and burned two holes in the roof,” he said.
The Duncan Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire quickly before it caused damage to any of the surrounding properties.
“We were able to contain the fire within five minutes,” Burnside said. “There was no other property damage and it did not jump to other properties.”

Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
