DUNCAN —
If the autumn color palette appeals to you, the 34th annual OHCE Quilt Show will be taking place this weekend at the Stephens County Historical Museum.
Approximately 80-90 quilts were dropped off Wednesday afternoon in order to enter the show.
All quilts will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the museum.
“We do pretty good usually (on number of quilts entered),” said Zelpha Taylor, quilt show co-chair. “It’s free to come and look at the quilts.”
Several quilts that have been entered fall under the show’s theme “Colors of Fall” and feature the golds, browns and oranges that give this season its beauty.
While there are other quilts entered, it is the themed ones that will be judged and given ribbons.
While entry to the show is free, OHCE will have a quilt raffle.
This is a full size quilt that was made by June McGuire and falls in with the quilt show’s theme. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.
“All the money goes to the museum,” said Taylor.
The raffle will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday but you do not have to be present to win.
OHCE members are emphasizing that each ticket needs to have a name and phone number on it.
While some local civic clubs’ memberships have been declining, the OHCE groups said they are doing well.
Despite that years ago there were about 16 groups and now there are only five, each of those groups has about 20 members.
Additionally, these members are active within the clubs, as is evidenced by the quilt show.
“It’s unbelievable that for 34 years we’ve had enough quilts to have a show and a lot of our members sew,” said Betty Rupe, co-chair.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
