DUNCAN — Many parts of Oklahoma have been issued warnings for the blizzard, which went into effect Sunday night and will continue through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

It is not known how severe it will impact Stephens and Jefferson County, and many people are playing it by ear, but at the same time, taking precautions. Several people visited local grocery stores throughout the county to stock up on supplies.

By 9 p.m. the storm system began impacting Oklahoma, with a path of direction aimed at Stephens County and neighboring counties to the west. Warnings were issued for thunderstorms and winds of up to 70 miles per hour. This system is expected to turn into a blizzard as today continues.

As of Sunday evening, it appeared that local events were planned to go on as scheduled, including the Stephens County Junior Livestock Show, the Duncan High School Talent Show and a Duncan City Council meeting. Should those cancel or postpone, The Banner will post updates on its website and Facebook page.

State budget cuts push educators into early retirement
Oklahoma has made some of the deepest cuts in the nation in education funding in recent years, third only to Arizona and Alabama. According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, “Over the last five years, the state has cut per-pupil education aid for primary and secondary schools by 20 percent, or $706 per student.” At Comanche Public Schools, those cuts translate to $770,000.
