From the farmhouse to the show arena, area agriculture students will have an opportunity to put their hard work on display.
The Stephens County Junior Livestock Show begins Monday, with the hog show and will continue daily through the Friday night bonus sale.
“There’s seems to be a lot of excitement,” Mike Anderson, Stephens County Fair & Expo Center director, said. “I had a 15-year-old girl here the other day who was so excited to show her goat. That kind of excitement is kind of contagious.”
Fairgrounds staff have been working to get the barns and show arena ready for the week-long event. In all, more than 1,000 pens were set up for the show and fair board members assisted with pen assignments. Anderson said a lot of work has gone into getting the fairgrounds ready for the annual show, which is one of the largest the county fairgrounds sees each year.
“We’ve got all the pens up,” Anderson said. “We’re checking little things. We’re just doing the little odds and ends.”
Anderson said some ag teachers will arrive before the show to mark which pens will house each school’s animals.
He said some ag teachers have even taken shavings to be spread in the pens for their schools.
Some of the schools are getting in last minute practice by having district livestock shows before the county show. For instance, area students competed in the Marlow District Livestock Show this weekend at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center.
Anderson said while the students are the primary focus, parents, peers and grandparents also get involved.
“It brings all family together to help,” he said.
All hogs in place by 2 p.m. Monday.
Tuesday: Gilt show at 9 a.m., barrow show following the gilt show, sheep in place by 5 p.m., sheep entry deadline by 7 p.m.
Wednesday: Goats in place by 5 p.m. and cattle fitting entries due at 5 p.m., cattle fitting contest and ewe lamb show at 6 p.m., market lamb show immediately following ewe show, all cattle in place by 7 p.m.
Thursday: Doe meat goat show at 10 a.m., wether meat goat show immediately following doe show; steer show at 3 p.m.; heifer show at 5 p.m.
Friday: Awards presentation at 6 p.m., bonus sale at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re pretty well ready,” Anderson said. “As time gets closer, we’ll start seeing more excitment. No matter who’s here, it will still happen.”
