Woodrow Wilson teachers honored by Wal-Mart DC

Jewelry Distribution Center donates gift-cards for supplies

DUNCAN — The Wal-Mart Jewelry Distribution Center in Marlow recognized Woodrow Wilson Elementary teachers for going above and beyond to teach their students.

Through the program, which kicked off with a school assembly, the Wal-Mart representatives provided giftcards to help subsidize some of the funds the teachers use for items in their classrooms.

“We pick a different school every year around Stephens County,” Wayne Casey, who is part of the Wal-Mart Jewelry Distribution Center management team.

Last year, the distribution center recognized Horace Mann Elementary in a similar fashion. The recognition program through Wal-Mart called “Teacher Rewards.”

The program also provided lunch for the teachers.

The management teach, who stopped by the school for the day, cooked chicken fajitas for the Woodrow Wilson faculty and staff.

Additionally, the distribution center held a shoe drive and collected 75 pairs of shoes. That day, the school put a pair of shoes to use when one child’s flip-flop broke.

Woodrow Wilson Principal Carol Phipps was proud to have her teachers recognized for all they do for their students. Phipps said the Woodrow Wilson teachers work hard to educate their students.

She said the distribution center management team recognized each teacher individually during the morning assembly. Through that assembly, the management team talked about how much work teachers put into their jobs, providing education for students.

“They talked about how hard teachers work,” Phipps said.

Casey said many teachers spend a lot of money out of their pockets to provide teaching resources various school districts may not have the funds to supply.

“It will supplement some of the money teachers spend out of their own pockets,” Casey said.
