DUNCAN —
Having won the Republican runoff in state Senate District 43, Corey Brooks can now focus entirely on the Nov. 6 general election.
For the most part, that’s what Democrat Mike Fullerton of Newcastle has been doing all along.
With no party opponent for the newly drawn district covering most of Stephens County, all of McClain County and parts of Garvin and Grady counties, Fullerton has been campaigning in the wings, waiting for Republicans to settle on their candidate.
GOP voters did that Tuesday, giving an overwhelming nod to Brooks over Peggy Davenport of Duncan.
“They’ve been beating each other up pretty good,” said Fullerton, who knocked on doors in McClain County during Tuesday’s runoff.
“I’m talking to Democrats, independents and I have a lot of Republicans who like me as well.”
Voters in Stephens County will get a say in other races as well on Nov. 6, including the presidential contest and the sheriff’s race in Stephens County between Republican incumbent Wayne McKinney and Democrat Jimmy Williams, who is police chief in Marlow. It will be a rematch of 2008.
In other races:
- U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., faces Democrat Donna Bebo in the state’s 4th congressional district, which covers south-central Oklahoma and all of Stephens County.
- Democrat Todd Churchman is seeking re-election for District 2 Stephens County commissioner. He faces Republican Lonnie Estes.
- Voters will decide whether to approve a 0.15 percent sales tax to help Stephens County fire departments and five senior citizen nutrition programs.
- State Sen. Don Barrington, R-Lawton, is seeking re-election against Democrat Tony Terrill of Lawton in District 31, which covers western Stephens County and part of Duncan. It also includes Cotton and Jefferson counties and portions of Comanche and Grady counties.
- Republican Scott Biggs and Democrat Stewart Meyer, both of Chickasha, are running in state House District 51, which covers parts of Grady, McClain and Stephens counties. Republican Rep. Corey Holland of Marlow did not seek re-election.
- There will be six statewide initiatives on the ballot.
State Rep. Dennis Johnson, R-Duncan, did not face a primary opponent in House District 50 and will again represent the area because no Democrat filed.
Brooks, of Washington, Okla., in McClain County, handily won Tuesday’s Republican runoff in state Senate District 43, capturing 67.5 percent of the vote to 32.5 percent for Davenport. Brooks got 60 percent of the vote in Stephens County. Results won’t be official until Friday.
Brooks said Tuesday evening that he campaigned in the runoff “the right way” by keeping it clean, and it paid off. A phone message seeking comment from Brooks about the general election was left on his voice mail Wednesday.
Fullerton said it did not matter to him who won the GOP runoff and he did not feel at a disadvantage because of any voter recognition the Republicans gained through that election and the primary.
Fullerton had raised about $6,000 as of Aug. 13, according to campaign finance reports filed with the state. Brooks had raised $64,200 as of Aug. 13 and took in at least $4,500 more between then and the runoff.
Brooks has loaned his campaign $38,000 so far and as of Aug. 13 had spent nearly $56,000. Fullerton loaned his campaign about $588 and as of Aug. 13 he had $3,174 left.
But, Fullerton said, “I have funds coming in every day,” and he has been campaigning throughout the district. And there will be more yard signs posted now.
“We had been holding off on putting some of our signs up just to keep them from being damaged by the weather,” he said.
