DUNCAN —
The Duncan City Council is expected to consider the approval of a $9 million general obligation bond at the council meeting on Tuesday. If approved, the issue is expected to go before the people of Duncan for a vote on May 14.
Should the bond be approved by Duncan residents, Public Works Director Scott Vaughn said street repairs could begin by the end of the calendar year.
If the bond is not approved by either the council or the people, funding repairs for Duncan streets is not going to be easy.
“Without it, our funding for street repairs and/or improvements is just very limited,” Vaughn said. “With it, it is a pretty good shot in the arm for the ailments, if you will, for the condition of our streets.”
Although there are other options if the bond is not approved, Vaughn said the most pragmatic option would be using the city’s limited capital improvement funds that are shared with other city departments.
Vaughn said he is not expecting any problems at the council meeting and is expecting to see the item on the May 14.
“The city manager has kept them pretty informed,” he said. “We will try to answer any questions at the meeting.”
Information on the proposal is located on the City of Duncan web page. Vaughn has also been visiting various civic organizations the past few months raising awareness of the issue.
The 250 street segments chosen for repair were chosen because of the dire need for resurfacing, patching or sealing. With few exceptions, the streets that ran over water mains were not chosen.
