DUNCAN —
To say that the 2012 Duncan Main Street Banquet was a success would be an understatement as they broke records in attendance as well as fundraising.
In the five years that Tammy Johnson has been director of Main Street, she had never seen as large of an attendance for the banquet as she did Tuesday night. Additionally, it was the largest attendance of new members.
“It was really cool that as I announced the new members, most of them were actually there,” Johnson said.
Each year, the organization hosts a cake auction at the end of the evening and in years past, they haven’t ever raised more than $700 with it. This year, Johnson was excited to announce that they raised $1,500 with the cake auction.
“It was one of the biggest successes Main Street has had,” she said. “It is an image building event and it did just that and that’s very exciting.”
Another rave of the evening was the food. Johnson said she continued to receive texts throughout the evening complementing the fare of pork steak, baked potatoes, corn on the cob and peach cobbler with ice cream.
After the meal, 12 awards were given out from Main Street Duncan to recognize those who have helped improve the community and those who make Main Street events as good as they are.
Four entities were recognized for their 26 years (as long as Main Street has been an organization) of support.
They were City of Duncan, First Bank & Trust, IBC Bank and BancFirst.
Winner of the Most Loyal Main Street Member Award was Charlene Sullivan.
Volunteer of the Year was given to Tara Harper. David Yeager and Micah Harper were recognized as Board Members of the Year.
A few of the awards given go much further than Duncan Main Street.
Some are written up in reports that take Johnson and board president Micah Harper five hours to write up and submitted to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
More than 300 reports are submitted in each of the various available categories and the top three in the state are recognized.
Two Main Street submissions in 2012 made top three.
During the banquet Tuesday evening, Donna and David Duwe were presented with their certificate from the Department of Commerce as a Top 3 Winner for Best Facade Renovation with their Historic Fowler Home.
Additionally, the final three award winners at the banquet have already been submitted for Department of Commerce awards for 2013.
The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office won the Premier Partner award and have been submitted for Premier Partner.
Kelsey Avants won and has been submitted for Adaptive Reuse of a Historic Structure with his new office building renovation on 10th St.
Finally, Marcus and Leigh McIntire received the Main Street Hero Award and have been nominated for Facade Renovation for their repainting of the facade of their recently purchased store expansion.
Main Street and the nominees will find out whether they made the top three on March 12, 2013, in Oklahoma City.

Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?
Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
