USPS to look at Velma Post Office status

VELMA — Postal services in Velma could be changing, although residents will have the final say in how that change will occur.

The United State Postal Service is sending letters and surveys to Velma residents to get feedback about a realignment in the town’s post office. This realignment is part of the POST Plan from the U.S. Postal Service, which looks at the workload of community post offices to determine the best course of action to reduce costs.

Velma Mayor Shawn Enloe said this realignment could make for a lasting impact on the Velma community.

“The worst case scenario who have them go to another place, like Duncan, to do work with the post office. That’s the worst case scenario,” Enloe said.

“The best case scenario would take our post office from an eight hour day to a six hour day.”

Enloe said some Velma residents may discard the letter without reading it, but urges residents to take time to fill out the included survey. He said the survey will could have an impact on how services are continued for Velma residents.

“There is actually a survey they want us to take,” Enloe said.

In the survey, four options are provided.

These include:

n Keep the office open, but with realigned weekday window service house, based on actual office workload. In the case of the Velma Post Office, hours would be changed from eight hours each weekday to six hours each weekday. Current Saturday window service hours will not change as a result of POST Plan.

n Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and provide roadside mailbox delivery. Retail and delivery service would be provided through a rural carrier. Main delivery points will be established or maintained and customers can purchase most postal services through the carrier or other alternative access points. If resident currently receives delivery service, POST Plan will not affect that service.

n Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and find a suitable alternative location operated by a contractor, usually at a local business.

When businesses are found that meet the criteria, these establishments are contracted through the United States Postal Service and offer stamps and flat rate products with service hours generally more expansive than what the local post office may be able to offer.

n Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and relocate post office box service to a nearby post office.
