Velma to focus on updating town policies

VELMA —

Updating town policies will be the focus at the Town of Velma council as they look at its drug testing policy and fine schedules.
Though Velma does have a drug testing policy in place, Mayor Shawn Enloe said it’s not a clear one. He and the council will be looking to improve the policy during the regular meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the council chambers of Velma Town Hall.
“The city attorney has documents prepared for us to look over and possibly adopt a new policy,” he said. “We want to make sure everything is where it needs to be.”
The drug testing policy is for all city employees or volunteers, such as members of the police or fire departments, who use city equipment. Though their testing is random according to the drug testing policy right now, there isn’t a clear schedule for them to be done.
Bond and fine schedules are also an issue to be tackled during the meeting in an effort to get them up to state standards.
“Our fines for different offenses, such as speeding, haven’t gone up in years and are much lower than state standards,” Enloe said. “We’re going to work on getting them up where they need to be.”
Enloe said they aren’t anticipating any new business, therefore, with the discussions on the two items of old business, the meeting could be a short one or run the length of time of a normal meeting.

  • A special day for memories

Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
