Heroes and educators to be honored

Duncan Chamber requests reservations be made soon

DUNCAN — There is an addition to the people being recognized at the 11th annual Heroes Luncheon at noon Friday in the Simmons Center Chisholm Hall hosted by the Duncan Chamber of Commerce.

The event always celebrates the dedication and service of both active and retired military personnel, as well as those employed in or retired from agencies such as the police force, fire department and emergency medical service. This year, educators will be added to the list.

“The Chamber supports our educators and want to extend our welcome to them,” said Laurie Baldwin, Chamber of Commerce director of events.

Educators do much for the community and sacrifice time and energy to educate future service men and women, she said. Educators were added to the list of honorees after the Chamber chose Dr. Sherry Labyer as key note speaker.

“Dr. Labyer has a lot to offer and we needed a feel-good speaker,” said Baldwin. “We know she can deliver that.”

Keeping with the school theme, the Duncan High School Reflections Choir and the DHS Jazz Band will be performing. There are about 50 students involved collectively and each group will sing two songs individually, then join together for one song.

The Heroes Luncheon draws in about 200 people each year on average and is free to all military personnel, active or retired. For the public it is $11 and the money goes to pay for the meal that is served.

“It’s a feel good reason to give back to the community,” Baldwin said of the event that was begun following the tragedy of 9/11.

Table sponsors are also encouraged and there are about 25 total between half and full table sponsors. That is a high number of sponsors, but Baldwin said they are always seeking more. The annual Heroes Luncheon began in 2002.
