DUNCAN —
U.S. Highway 81, between Duncan and Comanche was shut down for almost two and a half hours on Wednesday as law enforcement and emergency services from around Stephens County worked to clean up a fatality car collision. It was the only traffic fatality to have occurred in Stephens County on the Fourth of July holiday.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Paula J. White, 53, of Waurika, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred at 6:01 p.m. on U.S Hwy. 81, one-tenth of a mile north of Refinery Road.
White was driving her Mercury Marquis southbound on the highway when she entered into the northbound lane and according to the report, she drove into the northbound shoulder before swerving to get back into the southbound lane when her car crashed into a van heading northbound, occupied by Margaret and Edmond Knox of Marlow.

Edmond, 76, was transported to DRH and was treated and released.
Seatbelts were in use by the drivers of both vehicles and the passenger.
OHP’s report listed the cause of the collision was because White was under the influence of medications.
