Biggs secures Republican primary for District 51

DUNCAN — Scott R. Biggs secured the Republican primary in the Oklahoma Primary Election for Oklahoma House District 51 by receiving more than 55 percent of the vote.

Although Julie McKinney won Stephens County with 46.24 percent of the vote versus Biggs’ 41.5 percent, Biggs’ numbers were stronger in Grady and McClain counties. Biggs does not face opposition for the position.

The tri-county district race pitted Central High’s McKinney against Biggs of Chickasha, and Glyn Byte of Blanchard, for the position being vacated by Rep. Corey Holland, (R) Marlow.

“I am overwhelmed and humbled to see the numbers,” Biggs said about winning the race. “It’s humbling. I appreciate the votes and all the help I received.”

The unofficial totals ended with Biggs earning 55.54 percent of the total vote within the House district. McKinney ended with 30.19 percent for the three counties. And Byte’s ended with 14.27 percent of the total vote in the district.

McKinney was happy to earn the most votes within Stephens County, but was disappointed by the outcome of the election.

“I tried my hardest,” she said. “I appreciate all the votes and help from my friends.”

Outside of Stephens County, Biggs pulled ahead, making a significant impact in his home county of Grady County. In Grady County, Biggs received 348 votes, while Byte received 78 votes and McKinney earned 47 votes.

McClain County didn’t impact any of the races much, only showing eight votes for District 51’s portion of the county. Five of those votes went to Biggs, and the remaining three votes were received by Byte.

Byte was also disappointed in the final election results, but was glad he chose to run for the House position.

“It was really busy; we knocked on a lot of doors,” he said. “It was a good learning experience.”

He said his next step is to go on a family vacation.

McKinney was proud of her campaign and even more proud of the people who stood with her throughout the campaign.

“The campaign went real strong,” she said. “I had a good team. I appreciate the Stephens County votes.”

Biggs said was excited to win the election and is ready to start working for the House district constituents.

“I’m looking forward to helping the district out and listening to the people,” Biggs said.
