DUNCAN —
According to Stephens County District Court public records reviewed online Saturday, Miles Sterling Bench has decided not to have a competency hearing at this time. Court records indicate Bench waived his right to a competency hearing within 72 hours of evaluation on Thursday.
He is scheduled to appear for a felony docket call on Aug. 7, and a felony jury trial on Aug. 19.
Charges were filed June 11, 2012, against Bench for first-degree murder with deliberate intent. He is alleged to have murdered Velma teen Braylee Henry.
Braylee, 16, was killed June 6, 2012, at the Tepee Totem in Velma, where Bench was employed. She had gone there to buy a soda.
Bench was later that night stopped, driving Braylee’s vehicle, in Custer County. Authorities were able to track the vehicle because it had the OnStar program. According to the probable cause affidavit, he was wearing bloody clothing and there was blood in the car. Bench was arrested and then extradited back to Stephens County.
Stephens County Sheriff’s Office discovered Braylee’s body in a field near Bench’s grandparents home in Velma.
In 2008, Bench was arrested in Joliet, Ill., for domestic battery of his stepfather, and in January 2011, he was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. He also had an AWOL charge from the Great Lake Naval Base at that time.
