Investigations still pending on pedestrian accidents

DUNCAN —

A pedestrian who was hit on Elk Avenue on Thursday is still in ICU at the OU Trauma Center.
Duncan Police Officer Jerrod Bishop, who is heading the case investigation, said as of Sunday evening, the victim Melinda Chatham is still listed in serious condition but doing better.
Among Chatham’s injuries were several broken bones and a punctured lung.
Bishop said it still appears to be an accident. The driver Liegh Ann Vinson did not appear to be traveling at high speeds or breaking any municipal codes.
Chatham, 70, was walking home and wearing dark clothes in an area that was not well lit. However, the investigation will not be closed until after Chatham is released from the hospital.
Several pedestrians, including juveniles, have been involved in accidents where they have been hit by cars, in recent months. The Banner does not have an exact number. Duncan Police Department Patrol Captain Brian Attaway said they are still waiting for blood test results, which can take up to several months. Until those results are available, the cases are not closed. Once the lab results are returned, then the cases will be reviewed by the Stephens County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges should be filed against the driver involved in any of the accidents.

  • Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?

Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
