Rummage sale off to busy start

DUNCAN — Despite some unexpected early sales, people were still lined up at the doors at 8 a.m. Thursday for the first official day of the Toy Shop Rummage Sale.

Volunteers from Toy Shop and Christian Women United spent most of Monday through Wednesday setting the multitude of items up at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center where the rummage sale will continue today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Signs were made and put out by one volunteer Tuesday night, so some people showed up on Wednesday.

“There’s always a rush on Thursday morning,” said Kathy Snider, co-chair for the event. “It’s looking good, so we’re excited. It’ll help lots of kids.”

All of the funds raised go to provide toys for the Toy Shop annual Christmas give away.

This project helps to provide needy families with toys for their children.

Last year, they gave toys to more than 1,200 children and knowing where the funds are headed is one of the reasons people turn up in droves to shop.

“I love coming to the sale and it’s for a good cause,” said Sharla Miller. “It’s my favorite sale because there’s all kinds of stuff. I got a brand new DVD player for $7.”

Among the several tables are anything from electronics,        holiday decor, appliances, books, kitchen accessories.

An entire room is even devoted to clothing, shoes, bedding, purses and toys.

Volunteers are available to help find certain items and even other shoppers are seen helping each other out.

“This is my second year to help out and I’ve helped with the toy give away,” said volunteer Debbie Savage. “It’s a good project and I even find stuff for myself.”

All of the items have been donated by the community and donations as well as the number of shoppers grow every year, which is what makes this the biggest fundraiser for Toy Shop.

Many people return to the sale each year to find as many treasures as they can.

“You can find some good bargains,” said Wanda Woods. “I come every year, I wouldn’t miss it.”
