Highway road work topic of discussion at Chamber breakfast

DUNCAN — Duncan Mayor Gene Brown recognized the inconvenience caused by the road work on U.S. Highway 81, but assured people the project would be worthwhile.

Brown provided an update on the City of Duncan on Thursday during the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry community breakfast.

He discussed several items, with his initial focus on the road construction.

“We need to be patient with the little bit of inconvenience,” Brown said.

The project includes re-paving the highway, which runs north and south through the City of Duncan.

The highway is where much of Duncan’s business district is located.

Aside from the road work, he also talked about the water main installation in the Osage Road area.

The water main project is funded by Halliburton.

Brown also discussed the hiring of a new enforcement officer and a team of Duncan police officers who went through dive training.

Other items:

- Cindy Reynolds, representing the Duncan Rotary Club, discussed the Rotary Auction, which was previously the Jaycees Auction.

Reynolds said the Jaycees didn’t have enough manpower this year to head up the auction, which raises money to buy clothing for children. The program traditionally raises about $30,000.

“Rotary didn’t want to see it die,” Reynolds said.

The Rotary Club aided with the auction in 2011.

- Duncan Public Schools Superintendent Sherry Labyer updated the breakfast attendees on what is happening in Duncan Public Schools.

The majority of Labyer’s highlight focused on the inclusion of the Career Pathways pilot program, which is working to make the connection between education and a career.

To make this work, the school district doubled the number of counselors in the elementary schools so counselors could be more prominent in classrooms and teachers are also incorporating careers into their classrooms.

At the Duncan Middle School, some eighth-grade students are taking part in the STEM class, which makes the connection to careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

- Lori Mirth and Laurie Belcher talked about the upcoming Family Fall Fest, which is set for Oct. 27 at the Simmons Center.

This year’s program will include a craft show, a carnival, a magic show and a haunted house. Duncan High School’s Drama Department and Duncan Little Theatre are helping with this year’s haunted house.

- Mordell Trammel was named “Someone You Should Know.”
