Braylee’s Way makes debut as Velma street

DUNCAN — The Velma Town Council took time before their meeting Tuesday evening to present J.B Henson and Renee Henson, the parents of the late Braylee Rae Henry, with a copy of the street sign used to designate Braylee’s Way, formerly School Rd.

“During all of this, it made me proud to be a part of Velma,” J.B. Henson, Braylee’s stepfather said. “All the support we had, it made us glad to be part of this community, we’re a tight group”

J.B. thanked everyone involved in the project and thanked everyone for helping his family following the death of his stepdaughter.

“We wouldn’t have made it with out all of you and for what everyone has done, thank you,” J.B. said.

School Rd. officially became Braylee’s Way Thursday afternoon, after a phone call made from Mayor Shawn Enloe to Stephens County officials in charge of mapping services for E-911.

It took about a hour after the six signs were installed along the road for it to be official.

The call was made to ensure emergency services and law enforcement would be dispatched to the correct address

“We pushed for it to be done quickly, especially with school starting back up and we wanted to have that remembrance to Braylee installed before then,” Enloe said.

During the June 26 council meeting, the council members were presented with a petition with nearly 600 signatures to have the road renamed, to memorialize the Velma teen following her death on June 6.

A separate petition was signed by all the residents along School Rd., which runs north to south alongside the west side of the Velma-Alma School grounds, to ensure they had no issue with the changes to make with a street name change.

“To have that road named after her and have it right by the gym where she spent a lot of time, it was important we pushed as hard as we did to have it done before school started,” Enloe said.
