Fueling goes up

DUNCAN — The past few times gas prices have changed in Duncan, they have increased by 10 cents. On Thursday, those gas prices moved up to $3.599 per gallon, which is the highest gas prices have been all year.

In Chickasha Saturday, some stations reflected $3.649 per gallon.

When AAA released its weekly fuel prices and press release Tuesday, the Lawton prices averaged to about $3.439, which was about 6 cents less than what Duncan drivers were paying at the time. Tuesday’s national average was $3.60 per gallon, which was the highest recorded for that calendar day.

“The pump average in Oklahoma has soared 48 cents since Jan. 16, when the state’s average for self-serve regular gasoline was $2.97 per gallon,” noted AAA spokesperson Danial Karnes. “Gas price averages in every state in the nation have increased over the last week, up by a dime in Oklahoma but by even large amounts elsewhere.”

It was only two days after AAA released its press statement that gas prices increased another dime in Duncan.

According to the AAA website, Duncan’s average gas price was $3.628 per gallon on Saturday, although most gas station in Duncan had gas prices set at $3.599 per gallon. At this rate, the average cost to fuel a vehicle with a 15 gallon take is $54.42.

A week earlier, the average gas price in Duncan was at $3.447 per gallon. This time in January, gas prices averaged to $3.161 per gallon in Duncan. This time last year, the gas prices were at $3.458 per gallon.

Of the numbers provided by the AAA website, the only set that comes close to Saturday’s gas price average was six months ago, when the average price of gas per gallon was $3.625.

Duncan’s gas prices on Saturday had a range of $3.469 per gallon to $4.299 per gallon, noted the website. All but one of the higher prices gas prices in Duncan were on unbranded gas stations, although several unbranded businesses were either less expensive or the same price as branded stations.

“Since mid-January the national price at the pump has been propelled higher by somewhat more expensive crude oil, but more notably by regional refinery issues and the approaching switchover to summer-blend gasoline,” said Karnes. “Unlike recent years (Libya in 2011 and Iran in 2012), escalating geopolitical tensions overseas have not been a major contributing factor to the early-year price increase.

“Without a similar “risk premium” built into futures prices or new market-moving news, AAA expects that the increases to the national average will slow as temporary production concerns are addressed. Based on this expectation, the national average is likely to peak this spring at a lower price than in 2011 ($3.98 on May 5) and in 2012 ($3.94 on April 5 and 6).”

Duncan Police Department Officer Julio Alvarez responded to the call on Thursday and Master Officer Jerrod Bishop will be continuing the investigation.
