DUNCAN —
Wheels are in motion for an April 1 start date on a curbside recycling program in Duncan, Marlow and Comanche.
Members of the South Central Oklahoma Ecological Association, chaired by Duncan City Councilman Tommy Edwards, met with local and state executives of Waste Connections to sign a contract that would initiate residential recycling pickups twice a month in the three towns.
Now that the contract is signed, Waste Connections will begin obtaining the necessary equipment to provide this service.
Two trucks will service the three towns and the 95-gallon recycling containers will also be ordered.
Waste Connections is currently the provider of trash pickup services in Duncan, Marlow and Comanche and the recycling services will be an extension of the services provided by the company.
“There will be decals on the side of the truck so it is obvious that it is a recycling truck rather than the garbage truck,” Waste Connection State Sales and Municipal Manager Brenda Merchant said.
If the trucks and containers are not in by April 1, the towns should expect services to start on May 1 instead.
“It would be on the beginning of a month,” Merchant said.
Six weeks out from the projected start date, Waste Connections will begin the education process of how the recycling pickup will work.
Representatives from the company will be preparing fliers and visiting local civic organizations with information about the process, including information on both the fees associated with the program and the rewards program.
Because of the extra cart, residents of the three towns should expect to see an increase on their trash bill.
However, Waste Connection’s recycling program also comes with a way to either negate or lessen the impact of that fee through a “rewards program.”
Each resident’s cart will contain a microchip, which the truck will scan as it picks each cart up. Rewards for the recycling product contained in the cart will be deposited into each resident’s “reward bank.” The points earned from recycling can be used at local, and some national, restaurants and businesses, which should help cover the additional fee.
The contract with Waste Connections is a five-year contract guaranteeing recycling services in Duncan, Marlow and Comanche until 2017.
Edwards, who has been working on implementing a recycling program for a majority of his seven-year council career, is pleased to see promise of closure coming to the initiative.
“I have been working on this for many years so I feel good that we have come so far in this.
“If we can get started by April 1, that would be great,” Edwards said.

DTV-10 Programming of School Events
