VELMA —
The town of Velma is making the next step in replacing its old storm sirens after the town council approved a bid Tuesday evening from the lowest bidder.
After months of interviews with potential companies to determine which would replace the current, aging storm siren system, American Signal was awarded the contract, with a bid of approximately $38,000, said Velma Mayor Shawn Enloe.
“We were fortunate enough to get a low enough bid that came in with everything we need,” Enloe said. “Everything will be good for the community.”
Earlier this year, Velma received $45,000 as part of a Rural Economic Action Plan grant awarded to Stephens County. The project was estimated at $53,950, with the town supplying $8,950 out of its general fund.
The current storm siren system uses parts that are no longer manufactured, making it difficult to find replacement parts in the future. Enloe said the town is looking at three medium-sized sirens and have a good idea of where they would be installed. He added that, after American Signal is informed of being awarded the bid, the town will work with them for final placement before installation.
Enloe has said in previous meetings the process for purchasing and installing the sirens could take as long as six to eight weeks after the bid is awarded, missing this year’s severe storm season.
A rough draft of the 2012-2013 budget was shown to the town council members before being sent off to be approved by the town’s accountant. It will appear as an agenda item to be approved at the future council meeting.
Enloe said the rough draft is budgeted at a little less than the current budget, despite some several big-ticket items on the block.
“The street department will be needing a new road grater and our fire department will be needing new gear,” Enloe said.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
