DUNCAN —
Spring Break happened, and things went into overdrive for the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.
But talking with museum coordinator Cova Williams, that’s not a bad thing.
“It’s been busy,” Williams said about the museum. “Usually we’re not near this busy unless we have education programs.”
On Monday, 76 people made their way to and through the museum. Although Tuesday’s total wasn’t available, it reflected more than 50 people who attended the museum that day.
Williams said there have been several reasons for people to make it to the museum. The Heritage Center is a tourist attraction in itself, and the museum is also recognizing high school artists in its display this month.
“We’ve had five groups from Arkansas since the beginning of the week,” Williams said.
This week hasn’t been the only busy time for the museum lately. Last week was Spring Break for many Texas schools, which also had an impact on the number of people traveling to the museum.
The week of March 11 through 15 started out with strong numbers, including 87 people on March 11. The week ended with 167 people on Friday, which was the highest number for the week.
This week may be following in the same path.
Although people from several surrounding states have made their way to the museum, people have traveled from farther. The museum had someone from Michigan who walked through the museum this week.
Williams said there’s been a lot of things the Heritage Center employees have been trying to do, including setting up a cane and photography exhibition. She said having a lot of people at the museum is what it’s all about.

Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues
The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.
