Fatal step leaves teenager dead

DUNCAN — Hunter Vaughn, 15, Duncan, died Tuesday morning in Oklahoma City after being struck by a car in Duncan Monday night, police report.

The teen’s mother, Christine Vaughn, 36, was hit by the same car and remains in critical condition at Oklahoma University Medical Center, hospital officials said today.

Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said initial reports are the Vaughns were about 300 feet east of 2nd Street on Main Street when witnesses said the couple stepped into the path of an eastbound vehicle driven by a 22-year-old unnamed driver.

The Advanced Accident Investigation Team, which oversees all major injury and fatality accidents in the city, began its investigation after reports of the accident at 7:16 p.m. The team’s lead investigator, Master Officer Jarrod Bishop, is working with Lt. Joe Shoemake, who is handling the criminal investigation side for the team.

Ford said that per state law mandates, the driver’s blood was drawn and those results will unknown for several weeks. No charges are pending at this time because no state or city codes were violated by the driver and the incident is still under investigation, Ford said.

Investigation team members will package the information they gather and present the results to the city and district attorney, who will review the results to decide whether charges will be made.

Hunter Vaughn’s funeral service information is pending with Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow.
