DUNCAN —
The modern day adage “Real men wear pink” will hold true for the Duncan Fire Department in coming weeks.
The department is taking orders for its annual breast cancer awareness T-shirts. Anyone wanting to order a T-shirt can do so by touching base with the department’s administrative office, the Taylor LeNorman McCasland Cancer Center or any of the firefighters by Sept. 28.
The proceeds from the T-shirt sales will go to support the Cancer Center.
“This is our chance to give back to the public,” firefighter Tim Golden said.
This is the second consecutive year for the department’s T-shirt fundraiser. Last year, the department raised more than $3,800 by selling the T-shirts.
Golden said the fundraiser ended up being bigger than the department expected.
He would like to see another sizable participation this year, too.
“It was a lot bigger deal than we ever expected,” Golden said.
By taking orders through Sept. 28, the department hopes to have all the order submitted in time to get the T-shirts during the first week of October, he said.
Starting in October, all Duncan firefighters will start wearing their T-shirts. Golden recognized that some people may miss out on the opportunity to order their T-shirts in September.
He said some people usually get more excited about the T-shirts once they see the firefighters wearing them. Although that may be too late for the order, Golden isn’t ruling out the possibility of submitting another order if he gets enough interest from people in October.
“Once people see them, they usually want one,” Golden said.

Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues
The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

Is it ‘coincidence’ the OCE has no teeth?
Since I spend most of my working hours in offices in Duncan and Waurika, it’s nice both communities now have recycling programs so I can deposit the sticky notes that serve as my memory.
