DUNCAN —
IBC Bank at Main and 10th Street was robbed at 4 p.m. and within two hours, a suspect was in custody — in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers were able to catch the suspect through the means of “Mobile Cops” which allows instant teletype from patrol unit to patrol unit.
“Quite frankly, it’s just so fast or we may have not caught this guy,” said Duncan Police Detective Donny Foraker.
Few details were available on the individual that police have in custody — George Netherton, whose identification notes he’s from OKC, Foraker said.
“He has been arrested and is being brought back here by OHP troopers,” Foraker said about 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
The 911 call immediately had Duncan officers responding to an alleged robbery at a downtown bank at 10th and Main St. There happens to be two such banks — First Bank & Trust on the northeast corner, and IBC Bank on the southwest corner. Officers arrived and had weapons drawn, but FB&T was closed and it wasn’t known if they were closed because of the robbery. After making contact with a bank employee, they learned no one was inside that branch. More communications between the City of Duncan dispatch services and a caller led them to IBC Bank.
Quickly, officers began scouring Main Street for a man on foot. Several individuals were stopped. First Christian Church was also searched and some businesses in the area locked their doors and or sent employees home.
The bank released a surveillance image to DPD and Foraker quickly sent that to officers and to The Banner.
He said that the suspect had presented a note to the teller requesting several large bills. The man left.
At some point, City Taxi services realized the man had secured a cab ride to Oklahoma City. Through the Mobile Cops system, information was buzzing and OHP troopers caught up with the suspect in Oklahoma City.
It is not known if weapons were involved or how much money was taken. Foraker said the investigation is being turned over to the FBI office in Lawton.
