DUNCAN —
Duncan residents could see a route change with their trash pick-up during regular collection days.
During Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Duncan City Council will discuss possibly changing a route Waste Connections uses during its trash collection within the City of Duncan.
This isn’t the first item the council has talked with Waste Connections representatives about in recent months.
In fact, during the June 26 regular meeting, Brenda Merchant, state sales and municipal manager for Waste Connections, gave a presentation about establishing a monthly excess pick-up. It was a non-action item.
The Duncan City Council will meet at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers.
Other items:
- The council will could renew two agreements between the Duncan Police Department and Duncan Public Schools. Both agreements were approved by the Duncan Board of Education during its July 10 regular meeting.
The first agreement is for police security at school extra-curricular activities. With this agreement, the Duncan Police Department supplies off-duty police officers to work extra-curricular activities, including football games and tournaments, basketball games and tournaments, wrestling games and tournaments, school dances, and music contests.
The cost of the contract did increase because of wage increases for the police officers. The rest of the contract is the same as the 2011-12 contract.
The second agreement is for the Duncan Police Department to provide a school resource officer to the school district. The contract does reflect a wage increase, but otherwise is the same as the 2011-12 contract.
Officer Michael Breeze has been the school district resource officer for two years.
- The council could renew a contract with Delta Community Action Foundation Inc. for the Delta Nutrition Program. This contract, which is the same as approved in previous years, allows for the Delta Nutrition Program to take place at the Duncan Senior Citizens Center.
If this item is approved, the council will also have to approve an agreement with the Duncan Senior Citizens Center to authorize Mayor Gene Brown to execute the agreement.
- The council members could declare five properties as public nuisances for dilapidated residential structures.
These properties include 804 N. Third St., 113 E. Fig St., 209 W. Pine Ave., 405 S. 13th St. and 203 W. Spruce.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
