Simmons Center gave kids a chance to stretch their legs

DUNCAN — By the time Spring Break rolls around, grade school children are itching to get out of their desks and stretch their legs.

Each year, the Simmons Center offers an opportunity for them to do just that with their Mini Spring Break Camp, which took place this year Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All three days, the children who attended did crafts, swam, played at Centennial Park and inside the center.

“It’s been going well,” said Lori Mirth, recreational director. “They’ve been having a good time.”

Parents had the option to enroll their children in the camp for one, two or all three days of the camp. On Tuesday, there were 49 children who attended, which was about normal for one day.

“It usually goes pretty smoothly,” said Nicole Small, camp supervisor. “A lot of these kids go to the summer camps too, so they know the routine.”

Though the same schedule was followed each day, different crafts were done so that those who went all three days didn’t do the same one over again. One day the kids made Easter bunny masks.

“Crafts are my favorite part (about the camp),” said Alyssa Harvey, who attended the entire three days of camp. “I might wear it for Halloween.”

Harvey also said she really enjoys jumping off the diving board at the pool and that she was having a lot of fun at the spring break camp.
