DUNCAN —
Donte Lamont Hartsfield did not get that new pair of headphones he had been eying but he was awarded with a $25,000 bond for his efforts.
In his court affidavit, Duncan police officer Wes Wainscott said he was dispatched at 1:48 p.m. Sunday to Wal-Mart after reports of a shoplifter in custody.
Wal-Mart employees told Wainscott they had watched as Hartsfield had attempted to hide a pair of headphones, go into the store’s McDonalds and then try to leave the business still carrying the headphones, which he had yet to pay for. The employees had gathered into the loss prevention office with Hartsfield while waiting for Wainscott.
When Wainscott went to place cuffs on Hartsfield, Hartsfield attempted to run out of the office. He was contained and transported to Stephens County Jail. During the booking process, Master Officer Jeff Arnold found a bag containing a white, powdery substance, which was later confirmed to be meth.
The Stephens County District Attorney’s Office filed misdemeanor charges for the petit larceny and felony charges for the possession of controlled dangerous substance.
Hartsfield appeared in court Tuesday morning, where his bail was set at $25,000. He will appear for a preliminary hearing conference at 9 a.m. May 29.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
