‘Jailbirds’ raise about $24,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Association

DUNCAN — Though there were no bars or bad smelling cells, about 50 Duncan area residents went to jail Thursday.

There were a total of about 100 “jailbirds” who participated in this year’s Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up. Each had a $800 bond issued to them several weeks ago and those who didn’t reach their goal by Thursday spent an hour in “jail,” actually the Hampton Inn, where they made phone calls to raise the rest of the funds.

The overall goal for Duncan this year was $20,000 and by 10:30 a.m. Thursday, about $12,000 had been raised, said Daniel York, MDA executive director. In 2012, Duncan residents raised at total of approximately $24,000 for MDA.

“It’s going really well and it’s exciting,” said York. “The first two people have raised about $2,000 between them.”

Even if a participant did not raise all their funds by the time their one hour in jail was up, they have about 30 days after the lock-up to raise their goal. All the funds stay in the local community. As an incentive, for every $30 raised, the individual was given a raffle ticket for drawings for gift cards.

While a few of those making calls from “jail” resorted to begging and pleading for bail funds, a few made ruthless demands of friends and family. Among those in the first hour of the fundraiser were Mike Anderson, Tina Ford and Stacy Stewart.

“So far, so good,” said Stewart. “It’s fun because it’s a different kind of fund raiser and while we’re sitting here, it’s easy to focus on it.”
