DUNCAN —
As students wrap up their first quarter of the school year, they’re being greeted with a reward — Fall Break.
This year, Fall Break is set for Friday and Monday, which will give students and teachers a four-day weekend. All school districts throughout Stephens County are using the Friday and Monday take on Fall Break.
Fall Break has traditionally fallen on a Thursday and Friday. But the school districts chose to switch things up this year.
Duncan Superintendent Sherry Labyer said the Duncan School District chose a Friday/Monday Fall Break to give teachers and students two four-day school weeks. Labyer said teachers preferred this change, although they will have a say in next year’s calendar.
If they dislike how Fall Break figured out this year, they will have an opportunity to vote against it.
The idea behind Fall Break is to give students and teachers a break from school work, especially falling mid-semester testing. Fall Break marks the end of the first nine weeks of school.
When students return to class the following Tuesday, they will start work on the second quarter.
Fall Break isn’t the only break of its kind. In the Spring, students get a week away from school during Spring Break.
That separates the third nine weeks from the fourth nine weeks.
Spring Break is also the first break students get in the second semester, unlike the first quarter, when students have time away from class fro holidays including Labor Day.
Between the first and second semesters, students get Winter Break, which allows them time to celebrate religious holidays and other national holidays, including New Year’s Day.
Following the second semester, students leave class for three months during Summer Break.
Although Fall Break is the shortest of all season-themed breaks, it provides and adequate reward for the hard work students have put in so far this school year.
