DUNCAN —
This Saturday morning, area Cub Scouts will feel the need for speed.
Cub Scout Pack 409 out of Marlow will host a soap box derby race Saturday at the American Legion in Marlow.
Registration will be at 9 a.m. and the race is set for 10 a.m.
“Once a year, packs from within our district descend to one area for this,” Mark Watson, representing Pack 409, said. “We’ll split the boys into their own ranks. The boys will race two times each.
“They’re racing for trophies and bragging rights.”
Although the event is about the race, the derby will also feature a concession stand and a raffle.
Some of the raffle items include a night stay at the Lindley House and dinner at Napoli’s.
Watson said this will help raise money to allow the scouts to do things through the organization.
He said this will help lessen the burden on the parents, while keeping the children active in the Cub Scouts.
“It will help sent these kids to camp and will help them with their advancement,” he said.
Watson said the scouts were finishing their derby cars Monday night.
This included test running and painting.
This also allowed for the organization to put the final touches on the race track.
He said there may be soap box derby cars that are faster than others.
But everyone will be a winner in his own right, he said.
“All boys who come and participate will receive participation awards,” Watson said.
He said this is one of the biggest events for the Cub Scouts, and the scouts are looking forward to participating.
Watson said the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1192 donated a flag to the Cub Scouts for the event.
This is just another thing adding to the excitement of the event for the Cub Scouts and their pack leaders.
“It’s a fun day,” Watson said.
