DUNCAN —
“Remember When?” a highlight of the Duncan Christmas parade during the 1980s was the performance of the Chair(men) of the Board (Bored), a precision drill team of local businessmen assembled especially for the parade.
Trained or harassed by community volunteer Karen Ridley and using lawnchairs as their trademark prop, the Chair(men) performed a number of intricate routines as they marched the entire parade route for three consecutive years before retiring.
Members of the original 18-man group were Ed Apple, Steve Beebe, Bill Black, Bill Buxton, Ron Corley, Ed Darling, Richard Dixon, Clyde Edwards, Mark Harbour, Don Howland, Ron Ludwick, Doug Nix, Drew Page, Jim McCuddy, Woody Mitchell, Mike Rafter, Hal Stout and Bryant Turpen,
The Banner is looking for similar stories and photos from yesteryear as it assembles a “Remember When?” special edition that looks back at Stephens County’s interesting past and fun memories.

Monkeypox must be a joke from above
It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

A special day for memories
Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
